Our Classic Defender Wheel Carrier is made from a combination of 3 & 4mm Stainless Steel. We have designed additional internal & external weight spreader plates & shock absorbing gaskets. Compared to the original Land Rover Defender Spare Wheel Carrier, our Defender Wheel Carrier is twice as strong, has increased weight distribution on the front & is substantially braced on the inside of the door.
Our triple rubber gasket design ensures there are no points of metal on metal contact with the rear door & creates a watertight seal around the mounting holes. This stops any damage to the bodywork paint. Defender wheel carriers are known to rattle. Rubber gaskets additionally, act as shock absorbers dramatically reducing door shake & rattle. We even use shock absorbing washers to sit over the wheel studs.
Additionally we have created 3 x inner door hinge weight spreader plates. These spread the load / weight of the door, across the door frame more evenly where the rear door hinges attach. These plates are included with every order
Our Land Rover Defender Wheel carrier will carry up to 33 inch tyres with a 16-20 inch rim. A common misconception in the Land Rover community is that, you need a single arm wheel carrier otherwise your rear door will break. We disagree, this may apply to the standard Land Rover spare wheel setup for people running 35 inch tyres and above. It does not however apply to our design and setup when used with a 33 inch tyre or less. Especially when combined with higher quality upgraded billet door hinges readily available on the market.
We tested this wheel carrier on a 4500 mile Moroccan overlanding rally/tour over 14 days. Gravel, rocks, craters, hills, jumps and constant high speed uneven Saharan desert plains, the wheel carrier and rear door remained untouched.
Finally we have gone with a cleaner 5 stud wheel mounting design. This means that all wheel socket holes are covered / used by a wheel nut. Standard Defender wheel carriers only have 3 x studs, meaning 2 x wheel nut holes are left visibly open.
